The Sun That Stood Still &#124; When my grandmother passed away in late 2019 I found myself disoriented. I first returned to her house on the winter solstice. That December, the shortest day of the year augured the longest winter of my life. Of her belongings, I cared mostly about old photos, which I grabbed without a second thought. It would take me years to be able to scan them all and open the files on my screen. In that time, I began noting how certain memories blurred and I struggled to make sense of certain timelines. Rather than fight the fragmented nature of my memories, I chose to represent it in the photos themselves by combining the archival photos to photos I’ve taken both in the house and outside of it over the years. What started as an ode to my grandmother, quickly became an ode to the Levant through her story. One that maps across Akka, Damascus, Jezzine, and Beirut.

The World Is an Island&#38;nbsp;imagines the map of the world as a splintered assortment of land floating in a vast ocean. The land formations are the result of exposing sand to cyanotype chemicals for periods of time on each canvas. The piece is a reflection on the fragmentation of the world through artificially drawn borders. Playing on the phrase “no man is an island,” each canvas is a quintessential piece of the puzzle without which the work could not be complete, while the slithering gold leaf ties them together in a continuous assemblage.

Your body is the warmest place

Colonization is not merely the act of occupying a land and its resources. It is a system that preys on the minds and bodies of these territories’ indigenous populations. “Your body is the warmest place” draws a parallel between the human anatomy and topography. The subjects photographed come from a formerly colonized nation in either of Asia or Africa and currently live in the diaspora. Each photograph zooms in on a different body part depicting an amorphous shape analogous to a natural landscape. As the Polaroid is separated from its encasing and transferred onto watercolor paper, the photograph is thrown in hot water and scraped off the mylar that once held it in place. As the photograph loses its foundation it must reshape itself to fit its new home.

is an ongoing project started in 2016 in which the Mediterranean Sea takes center stage. Named after the sea’s coordinates, this body of work consists of Polaroids made along Southern European and West Asian coastlines.Bordered by over 20 countries, the Mediterranean is commonly perceived as a place of recreation and leisure. Of late, the sea has become the only viable route to safer shores for the many refugees fleeing war zones aboard hazardous over-packed rubber boats. In many cases, these boats never make it safely to their destination resulting in dozens of deaths at a time. For those who survive, the Mediterranean represents the stage of a perilous journey. For many others, it is a final resting place. The medium chosen to photograph these shores is quintessential to the work. Polaroids by definition do not produce photographs over which one has much control. To photograph the sea with Polaroids means to embrace the unpredictability of the medium, as well as the pictured subject—a large body of water that ebbs and flows beyond the limits of human control. Each photograph was deliberately damaged during the first 30 seconds of its development producing distorted landscapes. Devoid of any human presence, these photographs depict the sea as a somber place.

The title of this series refers to the miles separating New York from Tokyo. Every spring, soon after the spring equinox, cherry blossoms bloom for about ten days in both cities. Each piece is made from overlapping polaroids&#38;nbsp;of cherry blossoms in full bloom photographed in both locations in the Spring of 2019. The color scheme reflects the colors of dawn and dusk, echoing the 13-hour timezone difference between the two locations. As the sun sets in one city, it rises in the other.

Faces of&#38;nbsp;Poseidon

These digitally altered cyanotypes are made by exposing photo sensitive fabric to&#38;nbsp;beach sand. The exposures were then overlaid with digitally sourced images of Poseidon god of the ocean, resulting in images that bridge the earthly realm with the divine one, blurring the line between material reality and mythology.
